Rainy Day Blues

I opened the window this morning to let some light and fresh air into my room and found myself looking at a wet window pane. Another rainy day. It's cloudy but bright, like I need sunglasses to walk outside to be able to see. It's been raining for three days straight here in Florence and according to the weather app, it's going to be raining for five more days. I usually don't mind the rain, but that's when I'm back home and can stay inside, make popcorn and put my favorite movie on the TV. Here, in Florence, I am forced to go out and wander. By 11:30am, I walked almost 8,000 steps and by the time it got dark at the end of the day, I had over 20,000 steps.

The cobblestone streets of Florence get slippery when it rains which is not fun so a 25 minute walk to class can easily be more than that. I have slid while walking more times than I can count and it's just as scary each time it happens. The beautiful views and buildings around the town of Florence definitely make up for the rain and gloomy weather. On the way to class every day, I pass the Duomo. It is a stunning building that is actually a church. They have services here every day at 6pm, except for Sunday when they are closed. I have yet to go in for a service but it is on my list of things to do before I leave in May. It is currently under construction so I am hoping that the outside is done by the time I leave so I can get the whole experience.

Okay, now for the food part because the food here is another level of goodness and makes me so happy. When I usually order food from a sandwich shop or cafe, I take it to go and find a cute spot outside to sit and eat. However, that is impossible to do when any seat not under a roof or umbrella would make your pants soggy if you sat down. Today I walked with my pistachio croissant all the way over to the building where I have class (a 25 minute walk) before I could eat it. The croissant was a bit soggy by the time I got there but give me a pistachio croissant and I will devour it no matter what circumstances.

Florence is such an amazing city no matter the weather, but I am looking forward to those spring days. Hopefully they come reeaallll soon.
